Omaha Hi Lo: Fundamental Overview

[ English ]

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complicated but favored poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has increased in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to every player. A round of wagering ensues where gamblers can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. Another round of wagering ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, another card is revealed on the turn. Another round of wagering follows at which point the river card is flipped. The players must attempt to make the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where some players get flustered. Contrasted to Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must utilize exactly three cards on the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. No more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the identical concept in just about all poker games.

The lower hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the high hand wins the whole pot.

It may seem difficult at the start, after a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the base nuances of the game easily enough. Since you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an overwhelming assortment of betting choices and owing to the fact that you have numerous individuals trying for the high hand, along with many battling for the low hand. If you love a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha 8 or better.
