Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most difficult but favored poker games. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has expanded in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of betting ensues where gamblers can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are handed out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of wagering ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, a further card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of wagering happens and then the river card is flipped. The entrants will have to make the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where a few entrants get confused. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player has to utilize exactly 3 cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the very same concept in nearly every poker game.

A low hand is more difficult, but certainly opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the high hand takes the entire pot.

It may seem complicated at the start, following a few hands you will be agile enough to get the basic nuances of play with ease. Since you have players wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better provides an overwhelming assortment of betting choices and seeing that you have numerous players trying for the high, and a few battling for the low hand.
