Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most difficult but popular poker games. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure game, has increased in acceptance so amazingly.

Omaha/8 starts like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A sequence of betting ensues in which players can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. A further round of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. Another round of wagering follows and then the river card is revealed. The entrants must attempt to make the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where some players often get flustered. Unlike Holdem, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must utilize exactly three cards from the board, and precisely two hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the strongest hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same approach in almost all poker games.

A lower hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the complete pot.

It may seem difficult at first, following a few hands you will be agile enough to get the basic subtleties of the game with ease. Since you have people wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha/8 provides an exciting collection of wagering possibilities and seeing that you have several individuals battling for the high, along with many trying for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
