Omaha Hi Low: General Summary

[ English ]

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant game, has grown in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha/8 starts just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A round of wagering ensues where players can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is called the flop. A further round of wagering happens. After all the players have either called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. a further round of wagering happens and then the river card is revealed. The entrants will have to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where many players often get confused. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must utilize exactly three cards from the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the strongest hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the very same approach in just about all poker games.

The lower hand is more complex, but really free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no low hand available, the high hand takes the complete pot.

Although it seems complex at the outset, following a couple of hands you will be able to get the basic subtleties of play easily enough. Seeing as you have players betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at once, Omaha 8 or better offers an overwhelming range of wagering options and because you have several players battling for the high, and a few trying for the low. If you love a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha/8.
