Omaha Hi-Low: Basic Summary
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complicated but popular poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible variation, has grown in popularity so quickly.
Omaha hi lo starts just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A sequence of betting ensues where gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. A further sequence of betting ensues. Once all the players have either called or dropped out, an additional card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of wagering ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The players will need to put together the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a few players get flustered. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must use precisely three cards from the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the very same notion in nearly every poker game.
The low hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the higher hand takes the whole pot.
It may seem complicated at first, after a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the base nuances of play simply enough. Seeing as you have players wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are being used at once, Omaha hi-low provides an overwhelming collection of wagering options and because you have several players battling for the high, and a few battling for the low.
