Omaha Hi-Low: Basic Summary

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure game, has expanded in acceptance so amazingly.

Omaha hi-low begins like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A round of wagering follows in which gamblers can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. One more sequence of wagering ensues. Once all the players have either called or folded, an additional card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of betting happens and then the river card is flipped. The entrants will have to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many players often get flustered. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to use exactly 3 cards on the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the identical notion in nearly every poker game.

The low hand is more difficult, but really free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that could be made, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no low hand available, the high hand wins the entire pot.

It may seem complicated initially, after a few hands you will be able to pick up on the base subtleties of play easily enough. Since you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha hi/lo provides an amazing collection of betting choices and owing to the fact that you have several players battling for the high, as well as several trying for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is worth your time to compete in Omaha/8.
