Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker games. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible game, has grown in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha hi/low starts like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A round of betting ensues in which gamblers can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. Another round of betting ensues. Once all the gamblers have either called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of betting follows and then the river card is flipped. The gamblers must attempt to put together the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a few players get flustered. Unlike Holdem, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to utilize exactly three cards on the board, and precisely two hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same concept in just about all poker games.

A lower hand is more difficult, but really opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the whole pot.

It may seem difficult at the start, following a few hands you will be agile enough to get the base nuances of the game simply enough. Seeing as you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha/8 provides an overwhelming array of betting choices and owing to the fact that you have numerous individuals trying for the high, along with a few shooting for the low.
