Omaha Hi-Lo: Fundamental Summary

[ English ]

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complex but favored poker variations. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant game, has expanded in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A sequence of betting ensues in which gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. Another round of wagering ensues. Once all the players have either called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of wagering happens at which point the river card is revealed. The players must attempt to make the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where many entrants often get baffled. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must use exactly three cards on the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical approach in nearly all poker games.

The lower hand is more complex, but really free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no lower hand available, the high hand wins the complete pot.

While it seems complex at the start, after a couple of hands you will be able to pick up on the fundamental nuances of the game with ease. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha/8 offers an overwhelming collection of wagering options and because you have numerous individuals shooting for the high hand, along with several battling for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
