Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most difficult but popular poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant game, has grown in popularity so quickly.

Omaha 8 or better begins just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of betting ensues in which gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. A further sequence of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, another card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of wagering happens at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants will need to make the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where some players can get confused. Unlike Hold’em, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player must use exactly 3 cards from the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the best hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same notion in almost all poker games.

The lower hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no lower hand available, the high hand wins the whole pot.

It may seem complicated at the outset, following a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to get the base subtleties of play easily enough.
