Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most difficult but favored poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible variation, has expanded in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha hi/lo begins like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to each player. A round of betting ensues where gamblers can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. Another sequence of wagering ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of betting ensues and then the river card is flipped. The players will need to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where some players get flustered. Unlike Hold’em, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must utilize exactly 3 cards from the board, and precisely two hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same approach in just about every poker game.

The lower hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the higher hand wins the entire pot.

It may seem complicated initially, after a few hands you will be able to get the basic nuances of the game with ease. Seeing as you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha hi-low provides an amazing range of betting options and owing to the fact that you have many individuals shooting for the high hand, and many battling for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
