Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker games. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant game, has expanded in popularity so quickly.

Omaha hi/low begins like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A sequence of wagering ensues where gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are given out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of wagering happens. Once all the players have either called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of wagering happens at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers will need to put together the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a few players can get confused. Contrasted to Hold’em, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player has to use precisely 3 cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the best possible hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the identical concept in almost every poker game.

The lower hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand takes the whole pot.

It may seem complex at first, following a few hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the base subtleties of play with ease. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better offers an overwhelming array of wagering possibilities and owing to the fact that you have several players battling for the high, along with many battling for the low.
