Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complicated but popular poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has expanded in popularity so quickly.

Omaha 8 or better begins like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to every player. A sequence of betting follows where players can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. Another round of wagering ensues. Once all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. Another round of wagering ensues and then the river card is revealed. The entrants will need to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a few entrants can get flustered. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must utilize precisely 3 cards from the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the very same approach in nearly all poker games.

A lower hand is more difficult, but really opens up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the high hand wins the complete pot.

Although it seems complicated initially, after a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the fundamental nuances of play with ease. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha/8 offers an exciting range of betting choices and because you have numerous players shooting for the high, as well as a few battling for the low hand. If you love a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
