Omaha Hi-Low: Basic Summary
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complicated but popular poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure game, has grown in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha 8 or better begins just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of wagering ensues in which players can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. Another sequence of wagering happens. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, another card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of betting ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The players will have to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where some players get baffled. Contrasted to Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to use exactly 3 cards from the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the best hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same notion in nearly all poker games.
The low hand is more difficult, but really opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no low hand presented, the higher hand wins the whole pot.
While it seems complicated at the outset, following a couple of hands you will be able to get the basic subtleties of the game easily enough. Since you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha/8 provides an overwhelming assortment of wagering options and owing to the fact that you have numerous players shooting for the high, along with many battling for the low. If you enjoy a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
