Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complex but well-loved poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure variation, has expanded in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha/8 starts just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A round of betting follows where players can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of wagering ensues. Once all the players have either called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of betting follows at which point the river card is flipped. The players will need to put together the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where some entrants often get baffled. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must use precisely 3 cards from the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the very same notion in just about every poker game.

A low hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the high hand takes the whole pot.

It may seem complicated initially, following a few hands you will be agile enough to get the basic subtleties of play simply enough. Since you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha/8 offers an exciting collection of betting choices and seeing that you have numerous individuals trying for the high, as well as several trying for the low. If you like a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha/8.
