Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant game, has increased in popularity so quickly.

Omaha 8 or better begins like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of betting ensues in which players can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. Another round of wagering happens. After all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. Another sequence of wagering ensues and then the river card is flipped. The entrants will have to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many entrants can get confused. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player must use precisely 3 cards from the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. No more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same concept in nearly every poker game.

The low hand is more complicated, but really opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the high hand takes the entire pot.

While it seems complex at the start, following a few hands you will be able to pick up on the basic subtleties of play with ease. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha hi low provides an exciting collection of betting choices and owing to the fact that you have numerous individuals trying for the high hand, and many trying for the low hand.
