Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complex but favored poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure variation, has grown in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha hi lo starts like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to every player. A sequence of betting ensues where players can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. Another round of wagering happens. Once all the players have either called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. a further round of betting happens and then the river card is revealed. The entrants will have to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a number of players often get confused. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player must use exactly three cards from the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the best hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the very same concept in almost all poker games.

A lower hand is more complex, but really free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the high hand wins the entire pot.

Although it seems difficult initially, after a few hands you will be agile enough to get the base nuances of the game simply enough. Since you have players wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better provides an exciting collection of wagering options and seeing that you have many individuals shooting for the high, along with a few shooting for the low. If you love a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to play Omaha/8.
