Omaha Hi/Lo: General Outline
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complex but well-loved poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure game, has increased in acceptance so quickly.
Omaha hi/low starts like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A round of wagering ensues where players can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of betting ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of wagering follows and then the river card is revealed. The entrants must attempt to make the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where some entrants get flustered. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must use precisely 3 cards on the board, and precisely two hole cards. No more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same concept in almost every poker game.
The low hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the higher hand wins the complete pot.
It may seem complicated at first, after a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the basic nuances of play with ease. Seeing as you have players wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better offers an amazing assortment of betting options and owing to the fact that you have many individuals trying for the high, as well as many shooting for the low hand. If you prefer a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha/8.
