Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most difficult but popular poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure variation, has grown in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha/8 begins like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of wagering ensues where players can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. Another round of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, a further card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of betting ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants will have to make the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where a few players get flustered. Contrasted to Hold’em, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player must use precisely three cards on the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same approach in almost every poker game.

A lower hand is more difficult, but really free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand wins the entire pot.

While it seems complicated at the start, after a few hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the basic subtleties of the game simply enough. Seeing as you have players wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha hi-low offers an overwhelming array of betting choices and seeing that you have many players shooting for the high, and several battling for the low.
