Omaha Hi Lo: General Outline

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker games. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant game, has grown in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha 8 or better begins like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A round of wagering follows in which players can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is known as the flop. A further round of betting happens. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, another card is flipped on the turn. a further round of wagering ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants will need to make the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of entrants often get baffled. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to use precisely 3 cards from the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the strongest hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the very same concept in just about every poker game.

A low hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the high hand wins the complete pot.

It may seem difficult at the outset, after a couple of hands you will be able to pick up on the basic subtleties of play simply enough. Since you have players betting for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha Hi-Lo provides an overwhelming range of betting options and owing to the fact that you have several players battling for the high, and a few shooting for the low. If you like a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to play Omaha hi/lo.
