Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complicated but popular poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has grown in acceptance so amazingly.

Omaha hi lo starts just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A round of betting follows in which gamblers can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is known as the flop. Another round of betting happens. After all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, another card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants must attempt to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many players get flustered. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must use exactly three cards on the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same approach in just about all poker games.

A low hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no low hand available, the higher hand wins the complete pot.

Although it seems difficult at the start, following a few hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the base subtleties of play easily enough. Since you have players betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha High-Low provides an amazing assortment of wagering choices and seeing that you have many players battling for the high hand, as well as a few shooting for the low hand. If you like a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
