Omaha Hi/Lo: Fundamental Outline
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complex but favored poker games. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant variation, has increased in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha/8 starts like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A sequence of betting follows where gamblers can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. One more round of wagering happens. After all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. Another sequence of wagering follows at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers will have to make the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where many players often get flustered. Unlike Holdem, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to use exactly 3 cards from the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the best hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical approach in nearly all poker games.
The lower hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that could be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no lower hand available, the higher hand wins the whole pot.
It may seem complicated at first, after a couple of rounds you will be able to get the base subtleties of play easily enough. Seeing as you have players wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better provides an exciting range of betting options and owing to the fact that you have numerous individuals battling for the high, as well as a few battling for the low hand. If you like a game with a lot of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
