Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complicated but favored poker variations. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant game, has expanded in popularity so quickly.

Omaha/8 starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to every player. A round of wagering follows in which players can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. Another round of betting happens. After all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, an additional card is flipped on the turn. Another sequence of wagering ensues and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will need to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a few entrants get confused. Unlike Texas Holdem, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must use exactly 3 cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the strongest hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the identical notion in nearly all poker games.

The low hand is more complex, but really free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the higher hand takes the whole pot.

While it seems complex at first, after a few hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the fundamental subtleties of the game simply enough. Seeing as you have players betting for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha hi lo provides an amazing collection of betting choices and seeing that you have numerous players trying for the high, as well as many battling for the low. If you love a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha 8 or better.
