Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most difficult but favored poker games. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has increased in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha 8 or better begins like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to each player. A sequence of wagering ensues where players can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. One more sequence of wagering ensues. Once all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of betting ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The players will have to put together the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a number of players get flustered. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to utilize precisely 3 cards on the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the very same approach in just about every poker game.

The low hand is more complex, but really free’s up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the high hand wins the whole pot.

It may seem complicated at the start, after a few hands you will be able to pick up on the fundamental nuances of play with ease.
