Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most difficult but popular poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant variation, has expanded in popularity so quickly.

Omaha 8 or better begins exactly like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to each player. A sequence of betting ensues where players can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. Another sequence of betting ensues. Once all the players have in turn called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. a further round of betting follows at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants must attempt to put together the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where many entrants get baffled. Unlike Hold’em, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to use exactly 3 cards on the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the identical approach in just about every poker game.

The low hand is more difficult, but really free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no lower hand available, the high hand takes the complete pot.

Although it seems complicated at the outset, after a few rounds you will be able to get the basic subtleties of play simply enough. Since you have players betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better provides an exciting collection of betting options and owing to the fact that you have numerous players battling for the high, along with a few shooting for the low. If you love a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to play Omaha/8.
