Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most difficult but favored poker games. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure variation, has grown in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha 8 or better begins just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A sequence of betting follows in which gamblers can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is known as the flop. A further round of betting ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, a further card is flipped on the turn. a further round of betting follows and then the river card is flipped. The players must attempt to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where many players often get baffled. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player must utilize exactly three cards on the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the strongest hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical concept in just about every poker game.

A lower hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no low hand available, the higher hand wins the whole pot.

It may seem complicated at first, after a couple of hands you will be able to get the fundamental nuances of play with ease. Since you have people wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha hi low provides an exciting assortment of betting possibilities and seeing that you have many individuals battling for the high hand, and several shooting for the low hand.
